The houses in the historic old town of Cefalu are located directly at the sea and narrow alleys lead down to the beach. The former fishing village of Cefalu is located at the North coast of Sicily and is famous for its long sand beaches and turquoise-colored water. The local economy depends mainly, besides fishing, on the cultivation of citrus fruits, grapes and olives. Cefalu has kept its charme of a seaside resort and offers a wide range of touristic activities. Palermo is only 70 km away and can also be reached by train.
The skyline of Cefalu is marked by the 2 majestic towers of the Norman dome which was built in 1311 by Roger II. The dome houses one of the earliest and best preserved Byzantine mosaics of Sicily which dates back to 1148. The huge Rocca di Cefalu towers above the city.
Cefalu is a good starting point for excursions to destinations in the near surroundings such as the beach towns Castel di Tusa and Campofelice di Roccella, the mountain villages Petralia Soprana and Polizzi Generosa with their Norman and Arab architecture or the Zingaro Nature Reserve. |  |
